Ángel Jesús López, a guitarist from Almeria based in Barcelona, has presented his project Beyond the Canon, a collection of excellent but little-known classical guitar compositions, created by authors - from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries - not often scheduled in guitar concerts.
The audience response was excellent. With three-quarters of the venue filled—more than 200 people—the concert confirmed the growing interest in guitar music in Badalona. The decision to perform an unusual repertoire proved to be a great success. Far from being a barrier, the novelty captured the audience's attention, who enjoyed the music with concentration. Key to this success was Ángel Jesús López's performance: clean, elegant, sober and precise, which masterfully transported us to that somewhat forgotten universe of sound, brilliantly rescuing it. He also helped us with his brief presentations of each work and its composer.
Overall, we enjoyed this exercise in vindicating figures and music that leaves aside the established canons for classical guitar concerts, which tend to give greater prominence to the best-known composers. We applaud and congratulate this great young guitarist for his mastery and for this initiative. In short, it was a memorable evening, where music was once again the star of the show.
